Taste Test - Mom Dumpling House

OK, so I've been eyeing off this place for a while.  I generally don't choose to eat Chinese food when I go out but this restaurant serves a different style of Chinese food, North-Eastern Chinese, so I was willing to give them a go.  The other reason I wanted to try Mom Dumpling House was because I love dumplings!

You can't miss Mom Dumpling House as it is right on the corner of Albany Highway where the kidney shaped roundabout is.  It was easy to find parking and also a table for two at 7:30pm on a Saturday night.

They have a good selection of traditional North-Eastern Chinese dishes but also cater for those that want the more Westernised Chinese options such as lemon chicken.

Our order
Chives, pork and shrimp steamed dumplings (5 dumplings) $6
Pan fried pork dumpling (8 dumplings) $8
Hot and sour soup (small) $6
Spicy Pork Belly $15
Pickled cabbage with pork belly and tofu soup $18

Here goes...

Food and presentation - 2.5/5
The steam dumplings were quite good, I like the soup inside the dumpling and the filling was quite nice.  However, the oil used to fry the pan fried pork dumplings was dirty!  I wonder how long it's been since they cleaned their wok/pan or whether they are reusing their deep frying oil to pan fry their dumplings?  The pan fried dumplings were warm not hot, which made me wonder whether they cook it in the traditional way or whether they are just pan frying already cooked dumplings that were frozen.  The hot and sour soup and the spicy pork belly were disappointing, not spicy at all and was nothing remarkable.  The tofu soup was not bad but again nothing special and was inundated with white pepper.  Sorry to say but I've had much better North-Eastern Chinese food.

 Service - 3.5/5
For a Chinese restaurant the service was pretty good.  The wait staff were polite, cleared our table at appropriate intervals and SMILED!  When we went to pay, the waitress handed our change back with two hands and a bow and offered us some gourmet looking chocolate.  Service with a smile, just the way I like it.

Atmosphere - 2.5/5
When we arrived they were blasting the Eagles concert on their wall mounted television, little did we know that the Shania Twain concert was on straight after.  Hubby and I found their music and volume choice quite intriguing.  The general decor of the restaurant was unstylish and very Chinese.  I also wasn't sure about their orange walls...

Value for money - 3.5/5
The dumplings were definitely value for money, between $1-1.20 per dumpling.  The other dishes were pretty good value as well, as their servings are quite decent.  If only, the quality was better.

Don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
